What Different Types of Acne Treatments are Available?

Acne is a very complex skin condition to have and can occur at any stage of life. Whether you are in your teens, 20s, 30s, or 40s+, trying to prevent and treat acne (at any age) can be a very frustrating and emotionally draining experience. If you feel like you’ve tried everything and nothing seems to be working, it might be time to take your acne treatment to the next level with laser therapy for a more powerful approach.

Over the last decade Lasers, MicroNeedling with Radiofrequency aka Morpheus8, and Blu-U Light Therapy acne treatments have become incredibly popular and increasingly powerful for treating mild, moderate, and in some cases, severe acne.

Blu-U Light Therapy works to clear skin by killing active acne bacteria and lessening inflammation. Lasers and Micro-Needling with Radiofrequency work in a similar fashion by reducing active bacteria, shrinking pores, reducing redness, and stimulating the production of new collagen.

We believe that setting proper expectations is key to successful acne treatments. As you go through the different stages of your acne treatment plan, it’s important to understand that your skin may get worse before it gets better. It’s a process. Your skin will gradually improve over time. Acne is a complex skin condition that can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to treat. For some patients, it’s a lifetime of proactive management.

Different Types of Acne Scars

Since permanent scarring is never a desired outcome, it helps to know which type of scar is forming so you can be proactive with proper treatment. In general, there are four main types of acne scarring: ice pick, rolling, boxcar, and hypertrophic.

Causes of Acne Scars

There are many reasons for acne scarring, here are a few.
  • Ruptured breakouts: Acne scars are formed when pimples, whiteheads, or cysts burst and cause the infected pore to break the skin. When infected acne ruptures the skin, it can cause a bacterial infection that destroys healthy skin cells. As your skin heals, your body produces collagen, which is the fibrous tissue that naturally repairs the skin. In some cases, our bodies produce too much or too little of the fibrous tissue. This results in textural irregularities that appear as scars on our skin. The loss of collagen can lead to pitted acne scars, similar to the appearance of pockmarks.
  • Picking Your Skin: Scarring is often caused by picking and squeezing pimples—another reason to be hands-off when it comes to treating acne.
  • Cystic acne: The risk of acne scars increase when acne is inflammatory – red, swollen, or painful – this type of acne penetrates deeper into the skin. Deep-reaching, inflammatory acne requires more pressure to pop (which you definitely should not do) and takes more time for treatments to work (which requires patience), making breakouts last longer with a higher risk of scarring. In general, if acne breakouts penetrate deeper into the skin from inflammation or self-imposed trauma (like picking), scar tissue forms as part of the healing process.

Fractora for Acne Scars, Large Pores, and Rough Texture

Fractora is a combination of Micro-Needling and Radiofrequency technologies used for Active Acne, Acne Scars, Textural Improvement, Discoloration, and Skin Tightening.

Radiofrequency heats the deeper layers of the skin. This stimulates new collagen production, which tightens skin and shrinks pores. Micro-needling increases collagen synthesis for smoother skin.

Treats Active Acne
Fractora kills active bacteria and destroys overactive oil glands. With less oil production in the skin over time, the presence of acne-causing bacteria also decreases.

Treats Acne Scarring and Texture Irregularities
Fractora treats uneven skin texture by kickstarting new collagen and elastin production, the body’s skin-building properties, to reveal a smoother appearance.

Reduces Discoloration
Acne scars typically create pigmentation problems. Fractora uses radiofrequency energy to reduce hyperpigmentation and discoloration, revealing a brighter complexion.

Smooths Fine Lines and Wrinkles
During your Acne Scar Treatment, you will enjoy the additional skin-smoothing benefits of Fractora to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles in the areas you need it most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fotona Fractionated Laser Resurfacing

The Fotona Fractionated Laser treats the top layer of the skin to smooth acne scars and soften rough texture. The laser also delivers heat to a deeper level of the skin to stimulate new collagen production for tightening effects.

Fotona Fractional is a laser treatment designed to improve imperfections in the skin due to acne, aging, and sun damage. Fractional therapy means only a fraction or small percentage of the skin is affected, removing damaged tissue, and leaving the surrounding skin intact. This allows for faster healing time. Fotona Fractional is a safe and effective laser treatment that gives you an overall smoother and brighter complexion.

The Fotona Fractionated Laser uses heat to create tiny holes deep in the skin. By doing this, damaged tissue is eliminated and collagen growth is stimulated. Healthy, renewed skin is brought forward, erasing skin imperfections and repairing photodamage.

Results vary depending on the severity of the acne and that some patients may need more than one treatment. Fotona Fractional can be safely performed on most skin types. Most patients describe the treatment as a series of fast, hot pinches. A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin prior to treatment to alleviate some discomfort.

Acne Scar Treatments are often performed with other non-surgical treatments, including Botox and injectable Filler treatments, including Lip Filler, Under Eye Filler, Jaw Contouring, Chin Filler, Top Model Cheekbones, Non Surgical Rhinoplasty, Belkyra Double Chin Fat Removal, and Skin Boosters.
