Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

Open Rhinoplasty

Open Rhinoplasty is a nose reshaping procedure that involves an incision in the columella, the strip of tissue between your nostrils. The incision for open Rhinoplasty is strategically placed so it will be invisible once healed. Open Rhinoplasty is appropriate if you require more extensive corrections, particularly to the nasal tip. Many plastic surgeons advise this technique as there is more control in surgery and less risk of errors that could require correction later.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Many patients are interested in “scarless” Rhinoplasty, also known as the closed technique. Closed Rhinoplasty incisions are created within the nostrils, so no visible scars are seen. This method is not appropriate for extensive corrections to the nose tip, or even the nose bridge. Dr. Michal Brichacek is a graduate of the University of Manitoba Plastic Surgery program. He completed additional fellowship training at The University of Toronto in Adult Craniofacial & Aesthetic Facial Surgery. Dr. Brichacek is always striving to learn the latest techniques in plastic surgery, and he has visited and worked with leading surgeons in New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Vancouver, Toronto, and Dallas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recovery from Rhinoplasty varies for everyone. In general, we recommend planning for at least two weeks off work and regular activities. If you can take more time off work we highly suggest it. You won't regret taking extra time to heal and recover. You can easily perform sedentary work a few days post surgery. However, if your job requires manual labour, it's best to take extra time to rest and recover.

You will likely wear a nose splint for a full week after surgery and experience swelling, discomfort, and bruising. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities within one to two weeks.

DAY OF SURGERY
On the day of your Rhinoplasty, you will undergo anesthesia, hours of surgery, and then you can return home. Most patients want to rest the entire day after surgery. Sleeping with your head elevated is the preferred position for recovery.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER
Immediately after your Rhinoplasty, you will rest in our recovery room under observation while the effects of anesthesia wear off. Once you are alert and all is well, you will be released to rest at home.

ONE WEEK
After one week, the splint can be removed. Swelling typically peaks on day three and begins to diminish by the end of the first week. At this point, some patients feel well enough to return to work.

TWO WEEKS
By week two, most of the discomfort caused by congestion is resolved. There is less swelling; however, minor bruising continues to linger for most patients.

ONE MONTH
This is when the recovery process starts to get exciting! Your nose is beginning to take shape. You may find yourself smiling when you look in the mirror.

THREE MONTHS
With most of the swelling significantly improved, your nose appears natural, and the refinements are starting to reveal. You are free to workout, play sports, and resume weight training as you wish. Always take extra precaution with your nose, as any impact can damage the delicate structure.

SIX MONTHS
At six months, your recovery is almost over. You are likely feeling great and enjoying your increased confidence.

ONE YEAR
After a year, all reshaping and refinements are fully achieved and the new shape of your nose is revealed.

Every Rhinoplasty is a customized procedure, so the cost can vary significantly.
