What is Breast Implant Revision?
Every woman has certain goals for what her ideal breast following surgery should look like. Unfortunately, issues can occur overtime and sometimes issues can arise shortly after surgery as the surgery does not always go as planned. Many clients have come to The First Glance Clinic after an unsatisfactory outcome with another surgeon. Common complaints include:
- Hardening to the breast implant from excess scarring/capsular contracture
- Rippling, wrinkling that is visible
- Sagging or asymmetry
- Implants that have shifted out of place and are malpositioned
It is important to know, that if such issues arise following breast augmentation surgery that this is not from a “botched” operation. Breasts are a dynamic area of the human body and can be affected significantly by gravity, weight changes, and pregnancies. All of these affect the ability of the skin to stay tight – the presence of many stretch marks on the breast can be a sign of this loss of skin elasticity. This loss can lead to implant position changes or sagging of the breast or the implant over time. Further, biological processes that lead to scar formation around the implant – Capsular Contracture – can occur over time in some patients.
Breast implant revision surgery can correct these undesirable changes, restoring your breast to its ideal shape, position, and aesthetic beauty. Breast implant revision surgery is highly individualized. A customized approach to address the complication or issue will be developed. Techniques that are often used by our surgeons include:
- Fat grafting to replace the implants or hide visibility/palpability of the implants
- Internal pocket tightening to correct implant position changes
- Implant exchanges to implants of different size, shape, firmness
- Internal pocket change to the breast implant – under muscle, over muscle or neo-pocket creation
- Capsulectomies – total or subtotal
- “Internal bra creation” with human acellular dermal matrix or mesh in patients with loss of skin elasticity or poor tissue quality
- Underwire reconstruction of the breast inframammary crease (aka breast crease)
- Explantation – removal of the implants
- Breast lift
Other aesthetic surgeries patients are typically interested in combination with Breast Augmentation Revision surgery include Tummy Tuck and Liposuction
Breast Implant Revision Surgery is also often performed with other non-surgical treatments, including Botox and injectable Filler treatments, including Lip Filler, Under Eye Filler, Jaw Contouring, Chin Filler, Top Model Cheekbones, Non Surgical Rhinoplasty, Belkyra Double Chin Fat Removal, and Skin Boosters.
Choosing Your Surgeon
When considering a surgeon, it’s important to research all of your options and choose a Surgical specialist who is Board Certified in both Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. While many plastic surgeons perform many different types of surgeries, you should select a surgeon who focuses strictly on a specific procedure and is recognized for excellence in this procedure.
What are the benefits if your surgeon has a reconstructive surgery background? Most of the world’s best aesthetic surgeons began with reconstructive practices. In fact, almost all of the groundbreaking techniques in aesthetic surgery have reconstructive origins.
Reconstructive surgery cases are typically more complex and often require highly specialized surgical techniques. Comfort, confidence, and predictability with advanced reconstructive surgery techniques have become powerful tools often adapted to aesthetic procedures.
All of the Plastic Surgeons at The First Glance are Board Certified Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons. Many of our surgeons are also Double Board Certified.
