Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Male breast development or “gynecomastia” is a fairly common condition in males. It can be caused by a number of factors such as hormonal change, weight fluctuations, genetics, prescription medications or steroids. Often, enlarged male breasts can cause social and emotional anxiety or discomfort.  Some males are so self-conscious about it that they avoid physical activities or even intimacy.

Fortunately, there is a cosmetic surgery that can help. Male Breast Reduction will help re-contour and flatten the chest. Dr. Anthony P. Lockwood or Dr. Avi Islur will use a combination of both Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) and surgical excision to help eliminate the fatty tissue. A tiny incision is made at the border of the areola, then the “PAL” System is used to break apart and damage fatty tissue and cells. Any remaining tissue that is too dense to remove by liposuction is directly excised through the incision. The procedure is normally done under local anesthesia and takes 1-2 hours, depending on how much work needs to be done. You are able to go home shortly after the procedure.

How do I know if I am a candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

Male Breast Reduction is not a weight loss surgery, but rather a cosmetic surgery that is meant to restore confidence and improve quality of life in male patients. If you are a physically healthy male who has stubborn fat in the chest area you are a candidate for Male Breast Reduction Surgery. Stubborn fat usually consists of combination of excess fat and glandular tissue and may develop unilaterally (only in one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts). If the amount of breast tissue has not fluctuated for a significant period of time, you can come in for assessment to have this fat surgically removed.

What’s the recovery period after a Male Breast Reduction?

As with most cosmetic surgeries, you will need to take time to recover. The recovery period will be different for each patient depending on the extent of the surgery, and the patient’s health.  Swelling, bruising and some minor pain can be expected. You will need to wear a compression garment over the area to help reduce swelling. You will be able to return to work in 3-7 days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for the first week or two. As mentioned before, every patients recovery rate is different, this also applies to fluid retention. Your body will swollen in the area of liposuction and may not completely flatten out for up to 8 months.

Are there any risks to Male Breast Reduction?

This is a very low risk procedure. During your consultation, our physicians and their expert medical team will clearly outline all of the necessary precautions you need to take, as well as any postoperative limitations you should follow. Any risks and benefits will be discussed in full detail. Dr. Lockwood, Dr. Islur and their staff take every necessary precaution to minimize any risk involved with all surgeries or cosmetic procedures.
