Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Your eyes are the “windows to your soul,” as they say, because they reveal so much about you. Unfortunately, your eyes can also be deceiving if signs of aging have altered them. Instead of looking rested, alert and in-charge, you may appear to be tired, run-down, angry or unhappy due to drooping eyelids or puffy bags under the eyes.

As we age, the skin stretches and loses its ability to withstand the pull of gravity and the muscles weaken. This can cause your eyelids to look heavy and tired. The goal of a cosmetic Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) is to provide a natural, less tired, youthful appearance.

If you have developed noticeable pockets of fat in the lower lids, or excessive, droopy skin in the upper lids, you may need a cosmetic Eyelid Lift on your upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.

How is an Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) performed?

Upper Blepharoplasty
This generally involves a strategically placed incision on the upper eyelids, removing any excess skin and fatty tissue. Because it is placed in the natural contour of the upper eyelid, the incision is camouflaged upon healing.

Lower Blepharoplasty
This involves the removal of excess skin and fat. The incision may be made just under the lower lash line or inside the lower lid.

Dr. Anthony P. Lockwood or Dr. Avi Islur will decide the best approach for revitalizing your eyelids.

What’s the recovery period after an Eyelid Lift?

As with most cosmetic surgeries, you will need to take time to recover. The recovery period will be different for each patient depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s health.

After an “Eyelid Lift”, you may be asked to rest for the first week. Keep your head elevated for the first few days, and you may need to apply cold compresses or eye drops to relieve any discomfort. You will probably be instructed not to participate in strenuous activities for 2-3 weeks.

You will return to our office for a postoperative visit almost immediately and then periodically to monitor your progress. The postoperative time is crucial of the long-term effectiveness of your procedure.

What kind of risks are involved with an Eyelid Lift?

An Eyelid Lift is a safe procedure that has been performed for over 75 years. Thousands of men and women experience this surgery every year with no major complications.

During your consultation, our Physicians and their expert medical team will clearly outline all of the necessary precautions you need to take, as well as any postoperative limitations you should follow.
